The Benefits of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a nutrient your body needs for building and maintaining healthy bones. That's because your body can only absorb calcium, the primary component of bone, when vitamin D is present. Vitamin D also regulates many other cellular functions in your body.

To gain Vitamin D benefits, the recommended daily intake is between 400 and 4,000 IU. Lab tests have shown that many Americans are severely deficient in Vitamin D, which leads to many unhealthy consequences.

Daily sunshine exposure to mid-day sun is very important for producing Vitamin D benefits. 20-30 minutes per day is highly recommended, especially on your arms and legs. (You may want to shield your face in order to reduce sun exposure there, which can lead to wrinkles and excessive sun damage.)

Many older adults don't get regular exposure to sunlight and have trouble absorbing vitamin D. If your doctor suspects you're not getting enough vitamin D a simple blood test can check the levels of this vitamin in your blood.

Stay healthy friends!
