I started thinking about a Caretaker’s Checklist: Supporting a Loved One After Surgery.
Recovery doesn’t just happen in the hospital—it continues at home. Caretakers play a huge role in helping things go smoothly.
Here’s a general guide that applies to most major surgeries:
Home Setup
Prepare a safe, clutter-free space (remove loose rugs, cords, obstacles).
Keep essentials (water, phone, meds, snacks) within easy reach.
Ensure comfortable seating/bed with extra pillows or support.
Medications & Medical Needs
Track medication schedule (set alarms if needed).
Know red flags that require a call to the surgeon (fever, uncontrolled pain, unusual drainage).
Keep wound care supplies ready and follow instructions closely.
Nutrition & Hydration
Provide small, frequent, nutrient-dense meals.
Encourage fluids throughout the day.
Watch for nausea/constipation—common after anesthesia and pain meds.
Movement & Comfort
Assist with short, safe walks (per doctor’s clearance).
Help with position changes to avoid stiffness/bed sores.
Encourage gentle deep breathing to reduce lung complications.
Emotional Support
Offer encouragement—celebrate small wins.
Be patient with mood changes (fatigue and discomfort are normal).
Listen more than you talk; presence matters.
Organization
Keep follow-up appointments on the calendar.
Save all discharge instructions in one easy-to-find spot.
Track daily progress—small notes help spot patterns or concerns.Recovery is not just medical—it’s physical, emotional, and logistical. A thoughtful caretaker can make all the difference.
