Injection Therapy as a Alternative to Surgery

Orthopedic Injections

Orthopedic injections are often the first step to treat patients without surgery, helping to eliminate pain caused by inflammation and aid in healing. Orthopaedic injections deliver medication to a specific area of the body to assist in treating and reducing pain caused by inflammation. Injections may not completely eliminate all severe orthopedic symptoms, be it immediately (sometimes even permanently), but they can serve to significantly aid in pain reduction and allow increased comfort and function with activities of daily living.

Orthopedic injections are available to treat osteoarthritis and other symptoms in the knees, shoulders, hips and other joints.

What to expect after your cortisone injection:

  1. After an injection you may notice immediate relief of pain as a result of the numbing
medicine. There is a possibility of some temporary increased discomfort and swelling for up to 72 hours and until the cortisone begins to work. If you do have pain, simply rest the joint and use ice. If you tolerate over the counter medications well, you might try Tylenol, Aleve, or Advil for added relief.
  2. Some people have redness and a feeling of warmth of the chest and face after a cortisone shot. If you have diabetes, a cortisone shot might temporarily increase your blood sugar levels. Reactions vary.
  3. Apply ice to the injection site as needed to relieve pain. Do not use heating pads.
  4. A cortisone shot usually takes two to seven days to come into effect. The effect is
gradual in onset and it may take up to three weeks to show full effect by decreasing
the inflammation. The effect of cortisone may last up to three months.
  5. Watch for signs of infection, including increased pain, redness and swelling that last more than 48 hours. Call Ortho El Paso at 915-249-4000 if you have any questions or concerns.
