Navigating Insurance

Behind every insurance plan are varying deductibles, co-pays, coverage limitations and exclusions. It’s important to understand these coverages before you make your appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon. Otherwise, it could cost you.

Many insurance plans require that you see your primary doctor before seeing our orthopaedic surgeons. We welcome all of you, but want to advise you on how -- and when -- to book your appointment. If you need help understanding the limitations and requirements of your insurance plan, here are some things you can do:

  1. Talk to your Human Resources manager – If you get your health insurance through your work, this is the time of year when most employers are selecting next year’s plan. Contact your Human Resources department to inquire about orthopaedic coverage including to which orthopaedic surgeons are in your network…or, let them know the doctors you’d prefer to be in your network. Insurance companies really are always looking for employee preferences.
  2. Call your insurance carrier directly – If insurers hear from customers that they are limited on orthopaedic physicians in their network or have preferences, they are more likely to attempt to bring those doctors into that network. So, let them hear from you! To reach them, simply call the Customer Service phone number that is likely on the back of your insurance card.
  3. Call our office– We can help! While we accept most insurance plans, it is best to be sure. We have insurance specialists at Ortho El Paso that fully understand the specifics of most coverages.  If you need to see the orthopaedic surgeon for a consultation, or PRP injection, and you don’t have insurance, talk with our office about being seen as a “cash pay” patient. We may be able offer discounts or can work out payment plans for patients who are seen as “cash pay.”

At Ortho El Paso, we are ready to help with your orthopaedic care and that includes helping you navigate the sometimes complicated plans of the insurance companies. For a consultation, or if you have questions for our insurance specialist, call  us at 915-249-4000 or visit us at www.orthoep.com.
