The Health Benefits of Good Hydration

Did you know that the human body is 70% water? It’s true and it’s why staying hydrated is so important.

We use water in all our organs to help regulate body temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Because the body loses water through moving, breathing, and digestion, it's important to rehydrate by drinking fluids.

Drinking plenty of fluids to maintain and replenish water in the body is vital for things like muscle function, orthopedic or joint health, good immunities, digestion, and even for the brain. Water can also help you stay slim, boost your energy, and will keep you healthy!

For athletes, drinking water is essential for the proper circulation of nutrients in the body to keep it lubricated and operating at peak. That’s why you see them drinking water throughout many of their workouts and competitions. They are refeeding fluids to their bodies as they are losing hydration to sweat.

On average men need 3.7 liters of fluids per day, and women need 2.7 liters. All fluids count, including milk, juice, coffee, tea, and even water-rich foods.

Here are some easy tips for staying hydrated:

  • Keep a bottle of water with you during the day
  • Always drink water before, during, and after a workout
  • If you're feeling only slightly hungry, drink water instead of or in addition to eating
  • Eat foods (like fruits and vegetables) that contain water
  • If you’re thirsty, drink, even if you believe you met the recommended average fluid intake for the day

But, water can’t be solely responsible for maintaining bone and joint health. You must be in tune to your body. Sometimes you just hurt—whether you are suffering from an injury, overuse or for reasons you are unsure.
